A story about Robert Heinlein

I was in a reeeeelly boring business meeting the other day. I was just about to nod off, as everyone was enjoying the sound of their own voice and saying little of substance.

Then someone said “to fully Grok this issue, we need to have another meeting.” “Grok”??? I couldnt believe it. Maybe I had underestimated this particular manager! he had obviously read one of my favorite books, “Stranger in a Strange Land”! But no. I found that the word had just entered into the managerial vernacular, and had lost all of its core meaning and power. He was asking for another pointless meeting for people to speak over eachother and not listen.

I loved “Stranger…”, and it informs my love life.

I am a sucker for the human world viewed from an alien perspective in science fiction, unembedded perception (Why I like Terry Bisson’s Short Story, “Meat”), and allows for comment on the weirder customs (the observation about “flappers” is hilarious).

A story about Robert Heinlein

R.A.H. taught me:
That I can be a responsible anarchist
That a group of close friends is your family
and just because everyone else thinks your nuts doesn’t mean your wrong

Why I admire Robert Heinlein

(1) Robert Heinlein taught me that I might be happier in a group marriage because then I would have someone other than the Husband with whom to identify. I have tried running this by the Husband, but he isn’t 100% sure of it yet.
(2) Robert Heinlein invented the waterbed.
(3) Mr. Heinlein has a crater of the moon named for him.
(4) He taught me how to kiss.
(5) I am going to breed my children in his name with other children of long lifers. I myself married a redhead’s son.

A story about Robert Heinlein

Robert Anson Heinlein was my favorite author as I was growing up. A lot of my values, I feel, came from my parents and Heinlein’s writings. Unfortunately, since Mr. Heinlein passed away several years ago, I will never have the pleasure of meeting him.
